re: Test your knowledge of Tolkien's Brilliance

Alrighty, in light of the popularity of Brandos's trivia questions, I've decided to compile a list of questions of my own. Only thing is that these are concerning Tolkien's beloved realm. There's no real prize (I'm a poor man...) but you get the satisfaction of knowing more than most might.

If you don't want to spoil the game for everyone else PM me the answers.

  1. In what age of Middle Earth is the LOTRO primarily set?
  2. By the end of The Return of the King how many ages of Middle Earth were there?
  3. Who is Frodo Baggins's Father?
  4. What are the Silmarils?
  5. What is the full poem that the inscription on the One Ring is taken from?
  6. What is the origin of the race of Orcs?
  7. Who is the father of Turin?
  8. What was the mother of Shelob?
  9. How many Palantiri were there in Middle Earth (Arnor and Gondor) before they were lost?
  10. How many terms did Samwise Gamgee serve as Mayor of the Shire after Frodo Baggins left Middle Earth?
  11. How did Saruman die according to Tolkien?

Alright, that'll be all for now. Don't forget to Vote for us in the RIFT Top Guild Contests!

Does no one know? Is everyone too busy? Are the questions too easy?

I don't think I know any of them for certain off the top of my head, so I'd say they are not too easy. wink Give everyone some time and I'm sure you'll get some answers. Happy

I agree! Even if people only answer one question at a time, I'd love to see them answered here. I think people have had enough time to look them up if they wanted to do it to challenge themselves, so I don't think we should worry about spoilers anymore. Happy

I'd be very concerned if anyone knew all these answers.
Personally, I am very pleased to admit I don't know any of these answers. I even asked my 2 Labrador Retrievers. The chocolate lab quipped, "Only a cat would know all that..." The yellow lab was quite miffed at how Specist the Chocolate can be and snarled a "Have you learned no tolerance or respect for all species in your 2 year lifetime!?" which was followed by many fang displays and posturing.

Dogs and Hobbits... Ha, curious creatures, don't you think? What were the questions again?

No one has PMed me but sure, people can post them.

Oh shucks... I'm sick of waiting, here you go:

  1. The Third Age (Same as when most of the books and movies take place)

  2. Four (The defeat of Sauron led to the beginning of the Fourth Age of Middle Earth, it was a "Golden Age" in Middle Earth for Men)

  3. Drogo Baggins (Hey at least none of you said Bilbo...)

  4. The Silmarils were three gems of extraordinary brilliance that were crafted to contain the light of the Two Trees during the First Age (I think) of Middle Earth. They were the centerpiece for much conflict later in the history of Middle Earth. Also they were the base of the name of the book The Silmarillion which was Tolkien's main "History of Middle Earth."

  5. Three rings for the Elven Kings under the sky
Seven for the Dwarf Lords in their halls of stone
Nine for Mortal Men doomed to die
One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne
In the land of Mordor where the shadows lie
One Ring to Rule them all
    One Ring to find them
One Ring to bring them all
And in the darkness bind them

In the land of Mordor where the shadows lie

  6. The orcs were at one time Elves captured by Morgoth and tortured and mutilated beyond recognition. (Alright, there's controversy over this one, other versions say that they were created/bred by Morgoth but the Silmarilion says they were elves).

  7. Hurin; Turin was one of the few mortal men to receive Lembas from the Lady Galadriel. He was a fierce fighter and he slayed the Wurm Glaurung. Read more in The Children of Hurin.

  8. Ungoliant - A demon that took the form of a Giant Spider (As if Shelob wasn't bad enough). She was independent of Morgoth but aided him in destroying the two trees that gave light to Middle Earth in the First Age (I think) by draining their sap (eating them). In the end Ungoliant consumed herself in her hunger.

  9. Seven

  10. Seven consecutive seven-year terms

  11. Grima Wormtongue stabbed his master on the doorstep of Bag-end after the Scourging of the Shire was ended by the return of Frodo, Sam, Merry, and Pipin and the rally that followed. (Yeah, they left that part out of the movies)

There you have it folks, a small lesson in the Lore of Middle Earth. Don't worry if you didn't know most of these (or any). They were mostly obscure facts. I had to verify a few of them to make sure I spelled stuff right and got the numbers correct.

May this knowledge enhance your game-play!

1. In what age of Middle Earth is the LOTRO primarily set? (Third Age)
2. By the end of The Return of the King how many ages of Middle Earth were there? (Four)
3. Who is Frodo Baggins's Father? (Drogo)
4. What are the Silmarils? (not quite sure on this one, but I think they're the jewels created by the Elves of Valinor(?) known to contain the light and beauty of the Two Trees)
5. What is the full poem that the inscription on the One Ring is taken from?

Ash nazg durbatulûk, ash nazg gimbatul,
Ash nazg thrakutulûk agh burzum-ishi krimpatul.

Three Rings for the Elven-kings under the sky,
Seven for the dwarf-lords in their halls of stone,
Nine for Mortal Men doomed to die,
One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne,
In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.
One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them,
One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them
In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.

6. What is the origin of the race of Orcs? (Elves and Men ?)
7. Who is the father of Turin? (?)
8. What was the mother of Shelob? (not sure the name, but she was the one who destroyed the Two Trees)
9. How many Palantiri were there in Middle Earth (Arnor and Gondor) before they were lost? (7)
10. How many terms did Samwise Gamgee serve as Mayor of the Shire after Frodo Baggins left Middle Earth? (?)
11. How did Saruman die according to Tolkien? (Wormtougue stabbed him in the back at the end of the Scouring of the Shire)

That's all I can think of off the top of my head, for now anyway Happy
Correct me if I'm wrong.
..and, no, I did not think of the first part of the poem off the top of my head!

Oops, didn't notice you posted the answers...oh well Happy

And, also, I believe the Two Trees were in Valinor before the First Age, as the First Age didn't begin until later.

I Knew you'd know at least some of them!

The part that's not in "Common-speak" for the poem is the inscription on the Ring in the original language of Mordor (for those of you who were wondering).
